HealthCare Institute of New Jersey statement on Assembly Bill A-1502, The Patient and Provider Protection Act and PBM reform

Trenton, May 14, 2026 ― Chrissy Buteas, President and Chief Executive Officer of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ – www.hinj.org), released the following statement concerning today’s Assembly Appropriations Committee’s passage of A-1502, the “Patient and Provider Protection Act.”

“The Committee and the bill sponsors should be recognized for their leadership on helping lower costs for patients while ensuring New Jersey remains at the forefront of medical discovery and innovation.  Maintaining the state’s reputation as the “Medicine Chest of the World” requires a balanced approach that both expands access to medicines and encourages the groundbreaking research that delivers tomorrow’s cures.

Buteas continued, “The companies that research and discover new medicines typically receive less than half the money spent on those medicines, while PBMs and other middlemen artificially inflate the cost and then keep a large percentage for themselves.  Reforming these practices and making healthcare more affordable is priority number one and we thank the Committee, the bill sponsors, and all stakeholders for their commitment to New Jersey patients and families.”
