Zenner and Gilmartin to Head HealthCare Institute of New Jersey Board of Trustees

New Brunswick, NJ, July 7, 1998 — The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey announced today that Patrick J. Zenner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., has been elected Chairman of the Institute’s Board of Trustees, and Raymond V. Gilmartin, President, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Merck & Co., Inc., has been elected Vice-Chairman of the Institute.  Their terms will run through July 2000.

Zenner succeeds Robert N. Wilson, Vice Chairman, Johnson & Johnson, who served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees since the Institute’s founding in 1996.

“We are delighted that Mr. Zenner and Mr. Gilmartin will lead the Institute for the next two years,” said William H. Tremayne, President of the Institute.  “We also recognize the sterling contribution of Bob Wilson, who served as the Institute’s first Chairman.  His leadership set the direction of the Institute in our critical formative years.”

Mr. Zenner, a 29-year veteran of the pharmaceutical industry, was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. in 1993.  Long active in industry, academia and civic affairs, he also serves on the Board of Directors of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).

Mr. Zenner also serves on the Board of Trustees of Creighton University and Fairleigh Dickinson University, and on the Board of Directors of the Hollings Cancer Center.  In addition, Zenner is a member of numerous associations, including the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, the Health Care Leadership Council and the National Committee for Quality Health Care.

Mr. Gilmartin has been President, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Merck since 1994.  Prior to joining Merck in 1994, he was Chairman, President, and CEO of Becton Dickinson and Company.

Mr. Gilmartin is Chairman of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America (PhRMA); Chairman of the Healthcare Leadership Council; and Chairman of Valley Health System, Inc., the parent company of two community-based hospitals in northern New Jersey.

The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey is dedicated to raising public awareness, understanding and public support for the state’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and medical device industries.  Since its inception, the Institute has pursued a broad range of informational and educational activities aimed at building grassroots support and awareness about the industry’s impact on the state’s quality of life and economic well-being and continues to build key alliances for the pharmaceutical and medical device industry in both the public and private sectors.
