New Jersey’s Life Sciences Community Responds to Japanese Disaster

Cash and Medical Product Pledges and Donations Total More Than $29 Million

New Brunswick, NJ, March 30, 2011 — New Jersey′s life sciences community is actively engaged in relief efforts in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami earlier this month. In addition, many companies are matching donations from employees to relief organizations.

“New Jersey′s biopharmaceutical and medical technology companies are always among the first organizations to respond to disasters anywhere in the world,” said Dean J. Paranicas, HINJ′s president and chief executive officer. “Corporate social responsibility is a pillar of our industry and permeates throughout these companies.”

“Through a combination of direct cash donations, medical product donations and matching contributions from their employees, HealthCare Institute of New Jersey members and their employees are once again demonstrating their commitment to the world community at this time of need,” Paranicas added.

Founded in 1997, the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ) serves as a unified voice for the state′s biopharmaceutical and medical technology industry in New Jersey.  It seeks to expand public access to the latest and most innovative treatments for diseases and build awareness of the industry′s impact on New Jersey′s quality of life and economic well-being.  It helps to advance the development and implementation of sound public health and business policies that support the interests of New Jersey, its people and its life sciences industry.
