Merck Chairman Raymond Gilmartin to Serve as Chairman of HealthCare Institute of New Jersey

New Brunswick, NJ, July 18, 2000 — Raymond V. Gilmartin, Chairman, President and CEO of Merck & Co., Inc., has been named Chairman of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey effective on July 1, 2000.  Mr. Gilmartin will serve a two-year term as chairman of the Institute, an association for the research-based pharmaceutical and medical technology industry in New Jersey.

In addition, the Institute announced that Fred Hassan, President and CEO of Pharmacia Corporation and Edward J. Ludwig, President and CEO of BD, will serve as Vice-Chairmen of the Institute for the two-year term.

Gilmartin succeeds Patrick J. Zenner, President and CEO of Hoffmann-La Roche Inc., who served as Chairman of the Institute from 1998-2000.  

Gilmartin is a past chairman of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), and now serves on its executive board.  He is a trustee of the Healthcare Leadership Council, and of Valley Health System, Inc.  He also serves as chairman of the Council on Competitiveness and the board of associates of the Harvard Business School.

Mr. Hassan is a member of the boards of directors of the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America and Avon Products, Inc.  In 1999 he was named “Pharmaceutical CEO of the Year” by the Financial Times London.

Mr. Ludwig became CEO of BD in January of this year.  He joined BD in 1979 and has served in a number of senior management positions in operations, finance, and strategic planning.  

The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey is an association of 19 research-based pharmaceutical and medical technology companies in New Jersey.  Based in New Brunswick, the Institute’s goal is to raise public awareness of the industry’s activities in the state.
