HINJ Announces New Board and Steering Committee Leadership; BD’s Jeffrey Sherman Named Board Chair

New Brunswick, NJ, July 6, 2016 ― The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ) has announced new officers of its Board of Trustees as well as the leadership of its Steering Committee.

Jeffrey S. Sherman, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), has been named Chair of the HINJ Board of Trustees.  He previously served as Treasurer of the HINJ Board.

In his role at BD, Mr. Sherman is responsible for furnishing legal advice to the corporation’s Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer and other senior executives, and is the primary legal adviser within the corporation to its constituents.

Mr. Sherman is an Executive Officer of the Corporation, a member of the Corporation’s Management Committee, Worldwide Leadership Team and other management committees, including chairing the Compliance & Ethics Steering Team.  Mr. Sherman leads the Worldwide Law Group and has oversight responsibility for the Corporate Secretary’s Department, Compliance & Ethics Department and Corporate Development.

Mr. Sherman in 2004 joined BD from Wyeth, where his last role was Vice President and Associate General Counsel.  Before joining Wyeth in 1990, he was a partner with the New York City law firm of Shereff, Friedman, Hoffman & Goodman.

Mr. Sherman serves on the Boards of Directors of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR), the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and the Atlantic Legal Foundation.  He serves as the Co-Chair of the Inside the Boardroom Subcommittee of the American Bar Association Business Law Section’s Committee on Corporate Governance.  He also is a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Corporate Law and Governance of the Rutgers University School of Law – Newark.

Mr. Sherman received his B.A. degree cum laude from the State University of New York at Albany and his J.D. degree magna cum laude from Brooklyn Law School.

Mr. Sherman succeeds Craig B. Bleifer, Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.  Mr. Bleifer continues to serve the HINJ Board as its Treasurer.

At its May 18 meeting, the HINJ Board also elected two Vice Chairs:

  • Yin C. Becker, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, Stryker
  • Mark J. Alles, Chief Executive Officer, Celgene Corporation

In addition, Lisa M. Goldman continues to serve as Board Secretary.

HINJ also announced that Wendy M. Lazarus, Director, State Government Relations, Pfizer Inc., will continue to serve as the Chair of the HINJ Steering Committee.

The HINJ Steering Committee’s new Vice Chair is Todd Spangler, Director, Public Policy & Government Relations, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company).
