HealthCare Institute of New Jersey, UMDNJ to Sponsor Medical Research Symposium

New Brunswick, NJ, September 25, 1998 — The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) announced today they will jointly host a research symposium on Friday, December 11, at the UMDNJ Conference Center in New Brunswick.

The symposium will feature presentations on New Jersey’s strengths in various research fields, working models of research collaboration, and three disease portfolios: oncology, heart disease and stroke, and analgesics.  Speakers from both academia and the pharmaceutical industry will present their views on business and academic collaboration.

“New Jersey is home to world leaders in pharmaceutical research and development,” said William H. Tremayne, President of the HealthCare Institute.  “This symposium will recognize the partnerships that already exist between our companies and the academic institutions in the state, and provide the opportunity to form more of those partnerships.”

“Our New Jersey academic institutions are producing highly educated graduates who can benefit both from the opportunities now to learn of the companies’ research, and also to work more closely with the companies, in current research relationships and also as industry employees,” said Dr. Stanley Bergen, President Emeritus of UMDNJ and co-chair of the symposium.

“In New Jersey, we are fortunate to have in place a number of creative partnerships between the research community and the pharmaceutical industry,” said Dr. Norman LaFrance, Vice President of Medical and Regulatory Affairs for Bracco Diagnostics Inc. and co-chair of the symposium.  “It is our hope that this conference will provide fertile ground for the development of even more innovative partnerships between industry and academia.  These partnerships are good for industry and research institutions, good for New Jersey, and ultimately good for patients, who benefit from access to state of the art medicine.”

“The strength of the pharmaceutical industry in New Jersey offers an incredible opportunity for our students,” concluded Dr. Bergen.  “The partnerships that develop between our schools and the companies benefit everyone in New Jersey.”

Findings from the symposium will be published.
