BD Chairman Edward J. Ludwig to Lead HealthCare Institute of New Jersey

Hillside, NJ, July 19, 2004 — Edward J. Ludwig, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) (NYSE:BDX), has recently been elected Chairman of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ).  Mr. Ludwig will serve a two-year term and is the first executive from a medical technology company to lead the organization.

BD is a global medical technology company headquartered in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.  Mr. Ludwig’s election demonstrates HINJ’s commitment to addressing issues of relevance to both medical technology and pharmaceutical companies in New Jersey.

“We’re fortunate to have Ed Ludwig as our new chairman,” said Bob Franks, president of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey.  “It is particularly exciting that a trustee from one of our medical technology companies has taken up this mantle. As the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey enters a new era of growth and our industry faces critical challenges in Trenton and in Washington, the skills, acumen and intellect of Ed Ludwig will be invaluable.”

Mr. Ludwig succeeds Fred Hassan, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Schering-Plough Corporation, who chaired HINJ from July, 2002 to July, 2004.  Mr. Ludwig serves on the board of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), the world’s largest medical technology association, and chairs its Board Committee on Technology and Regulation.

Ludwig is also active in philanthropic efforts and serves as a Johns Hopkins University Trustee and chairs the Advisory Board for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Additionally, he serves on the board of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, is a trustee of the Hackensack University Medical Center and was appointed to Aetna’s Board of Directors last year.  Since joining BD in 1979 as a senior financial analyst, Mr. Ludwig has served in positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of financial management, strategic planning and operations. Named President in May 1999 and Chief Executive Officer in January 2000, Mr. Ludwig was elected Chairman in February 2002.

The HealthCare Institute of New Jersey, based in Hillside, is a trade association of 22 global pharmaceutical and medical technology companies in New Jersey.
